A total of eight writers were finalists for New Canadian Media’s award for Reporter of the Year 2023. The jury of three judges evaluated dozens of stories submitted for consideration and chose their top 10 — two reporters had more than one story on the final list. Judges used four criteria to evaluate the stories: Quality of reporting, including number of sources; impact; style and clarity; and inclusivity.
“The task of choosing just 10 stories from so many excellent entries was really challenging. Irrespective of who wins, this list is a testimony to the NCM Collective’s journalistic excellence. We wish all reporters the very best!” — Diary Marif (chair), Mohsin Abbas and Deputy Editor Wendy McLellan.
The winners were announced during the virtual NCM Townhall last evening. Newsmaker of the Year 2023 Beheshteh Rezapour was also celebrated during the townhall last evening. The top three winners collectively won a total cash prize of $1,000.
Following are the top stories whose writers were shortlisted for Reporter of the Year 2023 (in no particular order).
